Abstract

Potato production is of economic and social importance for the population of the Puno region, which is located next to Lake Titicaca (highest navigable lake in the world) at an altitude between 3500 and 4100 meters above sea level in southern Peru. For the year 2017, potato production represented 15% of the regional GDP, in addition it is the livelihood of approximately 100 thousand rural families in the region where according to figures from the last census, the region of Puno in one of the poorest regions of Peru with a poverty rate of 24.2%. In this sense, potato production in the Puno region works as a "thermometer" of poverty since more than 3500 masl there are not many crop options and the presence of a bad agricultural campaign would worsen the degree of poverty live in the region. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out projection studies in order to plan potato production activities since population growth, climate change, technological problems, problems in prices and supply problems make it difficult to predict production in the future for the Puno region. The objective of this research is to apply an ARIMA model for the modeling and projection of potato production in Puno using the Box-Jenkins methodology. The study considers annual data between the years 1950 to 2017 extracted from MINAGRI and BCRP (Puno). The best model found for potato production in Puno was ARIMA (3, 0, 4) using the criteria AIC (Akaike) and SC (Schwarz). Then, the study is useful for the planning of potato production activities and policy decisions in the agricultural sector.
