Abstract

The objective was to characterize the guinea pig production systems. A survey was carried out from April to July 2019 to 187 guinea pig breeding families in the district of San Andrés de Tupicocha - Huarochiri, Lima - Peru. The data obtained were processed with the IBM SPSS Statistics v.23 program, performing a descriptive statistical analysis. The guinea pig activity is widely distributed and carried out especially in places far from the city, this species is important as a source of mediate income and food security. This study tries to describe the agricultural and animal variable; in the latter the population, food, facilities, health, management, marketing and limiting factors in the raising of guinea pigs in this area. The results showed that they have a semi-commercial breeding system (62.5 %) and a forage-based diet (91.2 %), however, they do not have adequate technical management. The breeding is carried out in a single group without distinction of class, sex and age; in kitchens - rooms (78.4 %). An average of 61.5 guinea pigs were found per family, and producers that have over 500 guinea pigs (2.1 %). The main diseases reported were ectoparasites (48.4 %), pneumonia (38.6 %) and salmonellosis (24.6 %). The breeding facilities are kitchens and rooms (78.4 %) while those that breed in sheds are based on adobe and materials from the area. 94.7 % of the respondents declared problems of diseases, technical assistance, genetic improvement, facilities and pastures, in that order of priority. This leads to a low technological level and production indexes, recommending technical assistance and promoting associative mechanisms for investment, as well as extension systems for their development, in order to improve their breeding.
