Endophytic fungi associated with the root of the quinoa crop (Chenopodium quinoa W.) in the highlands of Bolivia

Abstract

Endophytic fungi exhibit mutualistic associations with plant roots. These types of associations are important for plant survival in extreme environments. Currently, these types of fungi have great biotechnological potential in plant resistance to abiotic factors. The objective of this study was to describe the community of endophytic fungi associated with the roots of quinoa crops growing in the southern highlands of Bolivia. Endophytic fungi were isolated from the roots using the quinoa fragment plate method. Isolates were identified by morphological taxonomy. 20 morphotypes were isolated, the most abundant genera being Fusarium (7 sp) and Penicillium (1 sp); however, 12 strains were not identified by traditional morphological methods. This study reports the abundance and diversity of endophytic fungi in quinoa crops in the Bolivian highlands. Some fungi could have a potential role in tolerance to abiotic stress conditions.
