Estimation of CO2 capture from Tillandsial in the Ciudad Nueva District, Tacna - Peru

Abstract

The tillandsial ecosystem is a stable ecosystem Tillandsial throughout the year and depends on coastal fog for its sur l. Despite providing important ecosystem services, it faces anthropogenic threats that have led to its depredation in the city of Tacna, Peru, even with the existence of a protection law. The objective of this research was to estimate carbon dioxide sequestration in the district of Ciudad Nueva, province of Tacna, Peru. For this purpose, the cover measurement method was employed using 23 quadrats of 100 m2, in order to determine the total percentage of species cover and subsequently estimate CO₂ capture using a portable CO₂ analyzer (EGM-5). The results indicated that the total cover of tillandsias sp. in Ciudad Nueva was 53.65%, of which 19.91% corresponded to live biomass with CO₂ capture capacity. Measurements made with the Portable CO₂ Analyzer revealed that the tillandsial ecosystem of the Ciudad Nueva district captures approximately 831.09 tons of CO₂ per year.
