Abstract

Peru has more than 425,000 hectares of coffee, distributed among more than 25 commercial varieties. Unfortunately, these were almost always introduced informally; but in recent years, this situation seems to change. Our country does not have an entity dedicated to developing improved varieties of coffee. Therefore, the importance of introducing improved varieties to our country; but in an orderly manner and following the protocols established by official entities. This document aims to present a review on the characteristics of these varieties and some experiences of their behavior in our country, important information for an introduced species that has been cultivated for more than 100 years in the Peruvian jungle. In the germplasm collected in our country (“Peruvian germplasm”), varieties with yields higher than the national average were found, with a low incidence of cofee rust and with cup quality equal to or greater than 80 points. The genotypes belonging to the Catimores group stand out, such as UNACAF-90, UNACAF-135. In the coming years, it is expected that information will be available in our country on the behavior of the 35 varieties such as Ruiru, Paraíso, Kartila 1, Batian, Andungsari, Catiga MG2, USDA 762, which are being evaluated within the framework of the world variety trial, executed by WCR and coordinated by the JNC in our country. Similarly, of the 46 varieties introduced in 2021 by INIA from CATIE in Costa Rica and which are under quarantine at the Pichanaki EE in the central jungle, for subsequent evaluation in the field.
